Public and patient involvement in health and social care research across the island of Ireland

SMART-sling

Introduction

Research Area:

Bioengineering/ Surgery/ Urinary incontinence/ Uro-gynaecology

What is the research about?

Vaginal mesh implant surgery is a procedure performed with the aim of treating stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. This type of procedure has been paused in Ireland since 2018 following a number of reported complications. SMART-sling is a new medical research project funded by Research Ireland under the ‘Innovating in Health and Wellbeing Challenge’. The goal of the project is to create a novel flexible and implantable mesh treatment solution for female stress urinary incontinence, with reduced risk of associated complications.

Who is this opportunity for?

We are seeking a diverse mix of 6-8 people with lived experience of vaginal mesh implant insertion, either personally or through family members/people they have cared for. Collaboration will involve contributing to discussion around what needs to be considered in the development of a new implantable option to treat urinary incontinence. We want to ensure that we have a broad range of perspectives and experiences. We would particularly welcome the input of those frequently under-represented in research. This could include, but is not limited to, people from the traveller community, migrant groups, or those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. The group will play a vital role in ensuring that the patient perspective guides the research. No previous PPI experience is necessary – your willingness to share your views are what matter most. We are all too aware that imposter syndrome and the confidence gap can sometimes stop people putting themselves forward, so please do express your interest below – we’d love to hear from you. Contributors can expect to receive training in aspects of being involved in PPI consultation.

To take part you must be 18 years of age or older.

Opportunity for:

Person living with condition / Member of the public / Parent or carer
