Become a member of the Health Research Consent Declaration Committee (HRCDC)

Introduction

Research Area:

The HRCDC reviews applications for health and social care research where it is not possible to obtain explicit consent of the participant.

What is the research about?

In health research,  explicit consent is required for processing participants personal data. However,  sometimes it is not possible to obtain consent (e.g  emergency care or large scale data analysis).
The Health Research Consent Declaration Committee (HRCDC) reviews research applications in such cases to decide whether the public interest in conducting research significantly outweighs the requirement to obtain explicit consent from research participants.
The HRCDC is inviting expressions of interest to become a member of their committee, including from members of the public and patients. The Committee’s PPI representative members bring complementary perspectives to professionals and academics as members of the public, as carers, and as users of health and social care services in Ireland. In order to make a consent declaration, members of the HRCDC assess research applications and determine if the public interest in carrying out the health research significantly outweighs the requirement for explicit consent from participants. The HRCDC will provide full training to any PPI members on the requirements for membership of the HRCDC.
The HRCDC also considers the data safeguards in place for each study in order to ensure that personal data are handled appropriately and according to regulatory requirements.
Being a member of the HRCDC is an exciting opportunity to support the Irish Health and Social Care Research communities, especially in the cases where is it not possible or feasible to get explicit consent of participants.
