Public and patient involvement in health and social care research across the island of Ireland

Marie Curie Doctoral Network application for the ‘TRUST-RadAI – ‘Training Researchers for User Safe and Trustworthy Radiology AI’ project

Introduction

Research Area:

artificial intelligence

What is the research about?

Patient and public perspectives are essential to ensuring that AI is developed and used in healthcare in ways that reflect public values, expectations, safety, and patient-centred care. This research aims to explore how we can maintain patient-centredness and safety as intelligent technologies become increasingly integrated into healthcare.

To help guide this work, we are seeking members of the public to join a Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) Group. Your insights will help ensure that the research addresses the questions and concerns that matter most to patients and the wider public.

What will involvement involve?

PPI contributors will be invited to participate at key stages of a three-year PhD research programme, including:

  • An initial ideation meeting (to take place as soon as possible)
  • Approximately six online discussion sessions (around two per year) throughout the project
  • A final review meeting during project completion (anticipated January 2028)

Each meeting will last approximately one hour and will be held online. Sessions will provide an opportunity to review project progress, offer feedback, and help ensure the research remains aligned with patient and public priorities.

No preparation will be required in advance, although background documents may be shared for anyone who wishes to read them before meetings.

Who can apply?

We welcome applications from members of the public who:

  • Have attended a radiology department for imaging examinations such as X-ray, CT (CAT) scans, MRI, or ultrasound
  • Have supported a family member, friend, or carer through such examinations

Meetings and documentation will be provided in English and meetings will take place during UK/Ireland working hours.

We hope to recruit at least six public contributors. Previous PPI experience would be welcomed but is not essential.

Reimbursement

There is no payment available for the initial ideation phase. However, if the associated grant application is successful, contributors will be reimbursed for all subsequent PPI involvement in line with project funding arrangements.

Application Deadlines

  • Ideation phase: 15 December 2026
  • Ongoing project involvement: 31 May 2027
