Public and patient involvement in health and social care research across the island of Ireland

Working with key stakeholders to co-design strategies to support participation of young adults with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in Diabetic Retina Screening

Introduction

Research Area:

Diabetes

What is the research about?

Eye screening is important for people with diabetes to detect diabetic retinopathy, an eye condition that can cause vision loss and blindness. Since 2013, the Irish Diabetic RetinaScreen Programme has offered free, regular eye screening to people with diabetes aged 12 and over. However, fewer young adults aged 18–25 attend eye screening compared with other age groups. This project aims to support eye screening uptake among young adults aged 18–25. Researchers, screening staff, healthcare professionals and people living with diabetes will work together to develop new strategies to support attendance at eye screening.

As part of this project, we are forming a PPI panel known as the Young Adult Panel. The Young Adult Panel is a group of young adults aged 18–25 with type 1 or type 2 diabetes who will be involved as co-researchers. Panel members will meet for 1–2 hours every couple of months to share their knowledge and lived experiences. Panel members will be reimbursed for their time. We welcome young adults who have attended eye screening and those who have not to join the panel.
