Preeclampsia during pregnancy and the long-term prevention of chronic disease in affected women

Introduction

Research Area:

Chronic Disease Management/ Maternal health/ women's health

What is the research about?

We are interested in understanding women’s experiences of preeclampsia during pregnancy, and how they were followed up in the community after giving birth. Women who have experienced preeclampsia may benefit from long-term follow-up in the community for the prevention of other health conditions. However, we know very little about how affected women are followed up, or whether they are provided with specific information for disease prevention.

Women of any age who have experienced preeclampsia during at least one pregnancy in the past can participate, and particularly women aged between their 30s and 60s. Their experience of preeclampsia should have been more than one year ago (and it may have been a long time ago). We hope to include a diverse range of women, including from different parts of the country, with different ages, and different ethnic backgrounds if possible. However, any women who have experienced preeclampsia who may be interested are very welcome to get in touch.

Participants will be invited to join a Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) advisory group which will meet once or twice per year for the duration of the research project. This group will draw on their lived experience of preeclampsia to guide the researchers so that they produce clear messaging and information materials, and the advisory group will advise on how best to share results with the wider public. The main benefits of joining the PPI advisory group will be that participants will have an opportunity to influence what research is important to women who have been personally and directly affected by preeclampsia. This will help to shape the future follow-up care for women in the community.
