Introduction
Research Area:
Health services research/polypharmacy/prescribing/medicines optimisation/pharmacy services/GP services.
What is the research about?
This research is part of a PhD project looking at how we find the people who might benefit most from having their medicines reviewed by a pharmacist. We are interested in people in a community setting, for example attending their general practitioner or community pharmacy. To achieve this, several pieces of research are planned. Some involve looking at data on medicine prescribing to understand how many people use multiple medicines (e.g. more than 5 or more than 10 medicines) or have other issues with their medicines that might benefit from a review. We are seeking input on planning for this research at the moment. Later parts of the research will gather the views from experts (including research, health professionals, patients and the public) on how best to identify patients who may benefit most from a medicines review.
Who is this Opportunity for: We are hoping to form a panel to represent a range of perspectives. We are inviting individuals or their carers who have experience of:
- Community healthcare in Ireland e.g. visiting their family doctor.
- Taking multiple medications, e.g. more than 5 different medications daily.
- Living with multiple chronic conditions e.g. diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
What will PPI Contributors do:
We are seeking input on planning for this research at the moment. PPI contributors will be involved in one online meeting – 60 minutes over Zoom or Microsoft Teams on Monday 8th September. This meeting will give us the opportunity to discuss how patients and the public feel about using data on prescribed medicines for this research, and how best to inform the public about how their information is being used—for example, through social media. It will also help to shape the plans for the research using data on prescribed medicines.
