Introduction
Research Area:
blood banking services/ Transfusion medicine
What is the research about?
What is the research about?
Platelets that are donated by donors have a shelf life of only 1 week. This project will investigate how changing the temperature at which platelets for transfusion are stored, could extend their shelf life. It is conducted by researchers at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in collaboration with the Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS). The project will gather laboratory data on platelet donations stored at fridge temperatures (instead of room temperature) to prolong their shelf life. The results will be used to inform platelet production in Ireland.
Who is the opportunity for?
This opportunity is open to patients, blood and platelet donors, and individuals with personal or family experience of platelet transfusions (e.g. during treatment for cancer or for major bleeding). We are aiming to recruit 5-8 PPI contributors.
What will the PPI contributors do?
We are currently preparing a grant application to the Health Research Board (HRB).
At this stage, PPI contributors will be involved through an online discussion group in several aspects of the study design by: exploring the aims & objectives of the research, potential strategies for PPI involvement during the grant duration, and ideas for dissemination.
The roles of PPI contributors
– Participating in discussions to ensure that the outcomes from the research are meaningful to patients and the public.
– Providing input on the strategies for PPI involvement during the study.
– Discussing ideas for the dissemination of study results to donors, patients and the public.
If the grant application is successful, participants of the discussion group are offered voluntary membership on a steering committee for the same research project. There is no obligation to continue in this role.
