Develop a workshop to help researchers try PPI

Introduction

Research Area:

Programme development

What is the research about?

I’ve learned a lot about lived experience in the last year and wish more researchers would give PPI a try. Part of the challenge for me was going through trial and error, so I think a roadmap for co-creation would be really valuable! This June I will facilitate a 90-minute workshop for researchers to help them include ‘experts by experience’ throughout the research process. I want to develop the workshop with a team of people, about half who have lived experience as PPI contributors. I am looking for one more person to join a small, international team that already includes some PPI contributors (5-7 people total) for three to four online meetings. Together, we will create the workshop. For example, we will make a skeleton of topics (What do you wish researchers knew?) develop content (What do we tell them?), and decide how to deliver the information (How do we teach them?).

I am seeking anyone with lived experience, including people who from populations that are often underrepresented. I would welcome the diversity of those who have experienced challenges with access (e.g., language, communication) or who have experience in unique circumstances (e.g., experience of homelessness, being in custody).

Opportunity for:

Person living with condition / Member of the public / Parent or carer

Where?

Online

If online, explain how:

We will use accessible technology (e.g., Zoom instead of Teams) and provide any reading material in large font. This is true PPI in that you would help design and organise the workshop from the start. In a small team of people (about half from research and half with lived experience) we will meet via online meetings like Zoom. In our first meeting we will discuss the themes that should be included in the workshop. In our second meeting we will expand on these themes to develop content. In our third meeting we will develop activities for attendees so they can practice these skills. Along the way, we will discuss what is the best delivery of the workshop, perhaps by including recordings or live-facilitation from people with lived experience.

If in person, explain where:

Not applicable

Other ways of communicating:

Email / Phone / Post / Social media e.g. follow The People's Review on twitter

Funding available for:

No funding available

If no funding available, explain why:

I regret that I have no funding, but I wasn’t awarded any to attend this conference. Despite this, I felt it was right to co-create this workshop that is about co-creation, so I hope others are willing to volunteer their time alongside me. Contributing members will be acknowledged and appreciated as an author/designer on the workshop. With their permission, I would provide their name on slides and in any handouts or material that is given to the audience.
