Development of an artificial intelligence software to supplement remote consultations of patients with chronic conditions
Home > Opportunities > Development of an artificial intelligence software to supplement remote consultations of patients with chronic conditions
Introduction
Research Area:
artificial intelligence/ cardiovascular conditions/ chronic conditions/ Chronic Disease Management/ chronic obstructive pulmonary disease/ Diabetes/ digital health
What is the research about?
This research is part of an ongoing PhD project that aims to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) software to supplement remote, virtual consultations of patients with non-communicable chronic conditions. The type of software that will be developed will depend on the insights we gain from conducting interviews with patients and healthcare professionals in the next stage of the project. Such interviews will provide details about their needs and challenges, which will be used to develop an appropriate AI to supplement those needs. Following the development of the software, it will be implemented in practice and its effectiveness will be assessed through additional interviews.
What are the PPI plans?
Our PPI group will include PPI contributors with chronic conditions and healthcare professionals. PPI contributors will join the research team at monthly meetings to help shape our research.
The involvement of these PPI contributors will be instrumental in designing interview questions as well as the bespoke software as we are looking to integrate both patients with non-communicable chronic conditions (such as diabetes and COPD) and healthcare professionals in the PPI group for relevant insights and lived experiences.

Logistics
Where?
If online, explain how:
Online meetings will be the primary form of contact and will be conducted via Microsoft Teams and scheduled ahead of time to accommodate for all meeting participants' schedules.
If in person, explain where:
As the main researcher is based in Letterkenny, if PPI members are in Letterkenny and prefer in-person meetings, these would be a possibility at the ATU university campus.
Other ways of communicating:
Text/SMS / video call / Whatsapp
Funding available for:
If no funding available, explain why:
Such funds are not available for the project currently but we are looking into offering vouchers if possible but cannot promise this option at this time. As meetings will mostly be conducted online, PPI members won’t need to travel for meetings.
