PPI Ignite network
National PPI Festival
The National PPI Festival is hosted annually in October by the PPI Ignite Network. The Festival sees PPI contributors, Higher Education Institutions, charity and community organisations, and research groups come together to celebrate innovation and progress in PPI across Ireland.

Festival 2024
The third National PPI Festival is now in full swing from the 1st – 31st of October! Co-ordinated by the PPI Ignite Network @ UCC, the Festival was launched during an in-person event in UCC on Tuesday 1 October, followed by a PPI in PhD research symposium. Read the full news article here.

Learning across borders: PPI case studies from Ireland and Beyond
On October 3rd PPI Ignite Network national office and PPI Ignite Network @ RCSI explore the concept of sharing learning and exchanging knowledge across international borders and to consider how we can build on, increase and strengthen international collaborations, knowledge exchange and reflection on best practice.

PPI INCLUDES: PPI Ignite Network Action Plan to include refugees and other migrants in health research
Launched during the National PPI Festival 2024, this joint report developed by Doras and the Participatory
Health Research Unit & WHO Collaborating Centre
for Participatory Health Research, University of Limerick, aims to develop a national inter-sectoral network to build
capacity for refugees’ and migrants’ involvement in health research
in Ireland. The project adapted an existing creative method, the Irish World Music Café, to facilitate this process.

Creative Communications: Hearing the Voices of everyone
On October 16th, Queen’s University Belfast’s PPI Network, Ulter University and NIPHRN came together to organise an event welcoming guest speakers with presentations from PPI contributors, patients, academic researchers, PPI professionals and advocates from various sectors.

Fostering Community Academia Partnerships
On October 16th, the PPI Ignite Network @ University of Galway hosted a webinar to discuss stories from the Medical University of South Carolina’s Clinical & Translational Research Institute and University of Galway on their collaboration and roll out of the Community Engaged Scholars Programme (CESP) in the US and Ireland. Participants learned about the commonalities and differences between such initiatives and the key factors and challenges in meaningful community/academic partnerships.

Voices that matter
On October 17th, the RCSI school of nursing and midwifery hosted a panel discussion with their advisory partners (experts with personal experience) and staff from the School of Nursing and Midwifery discussing why and how they include patients and the public in research and education, and share their plans for the future.

Training of patients as Research consultants
On October 17th, the school of Nursing and Midwifery at Sao Paulo State University in Brazil hosted an event for the National PPI Festival This event aimed to empower elderly individuals with chronic illnesses and community members to become research consultants. Participants learned how to engage in research through lectures, interactive games, and group experience sharing in the fields of cardiology, nephrology, gastroenterology, and neurology.

Empowering Youth Voices
On October 18th, The D1 Now Definitive Trial and PPI Ignite Network @ University of Galway hosted a webinar showcasing international examples of PPI excellence in the realm of health research for young people and young adults. The event aimed to demonstrate the impact of youth participation in research, sharing insights from young people’s experiences of participation and exploring the challenges faced by researchers in managing long-term youth advisory boards.

Evaluating PPI Training
On October 23rd, the Work package 1 working group (HRCI, DCU, and University of Galway) launched a PPI training evaluation resource, a practical set of materials to support facilitators of PPI training activities to evaluate their training sessions and events, with the ultimate goal of improving PPI training provision across Ireland. The resource, includes a question bank of potential survey questions, a facilitators guide and checklist, and editable templates to support evaluation efforts.

universal design for Learning & PPI
On October 15th, the RCSI PPI Ignite Network Office hosted a webinar discussing the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Framework and how it can be applied to PPI in Research. The event explored the intersection between UDL and PPI and how they complement each other through a common goal: agency.

Exploring Sex and Gender in Chronic Pain
On October 11th, staff from the University of Galway school of psychology partnered with Chronic Pain Ireland and the PAINDIFF Network to deliver a seminar exploring the critical issue of sex and gender in chronic pain. The event aimed to outline what we know about sex and gender as variables in chronic pain, and how future research will inform diagnosis and treatment outcomes for all.
