Introduction
Research Area:
Cancer Screening/ health promotion
What is the research about?
Each year, about 300 people are diagnosed with cervical cancer. People from lower socio-economic position (secondary level or below education and unemployment or low wage employment) and people living in urban areas are at higher risk of getting cervical cancer. Cervical cancer screening (also known as HPV tests, pap tests or smear tests) is an important action women and people with a cervix can take to reduce their risk of cervical cancer as it tests for Human Papilloma virus (a common infection that can cause cervical cancer). Cervical screening is available to any women or person with a cervix aged 25-65 for free. However, some communities are less likely to attend cervical screening, including those from lower socio-economic position.
It is important to understand what is preventing people from attending screening and provide information and supports to promote uptake of screening. This project aims to develop resources to support women to attend cervical screening who are less likely to attend. These resources will be developed in collaboration with members of the public, healthcare professionals and experts in cervical screening. This is to ensure the resources and information is acceptable and relevant for people in low socio-economic communities. We hope this research will increase knowledge and support people to attend cervical screening.
We are seeking three people who are eligible for cervical screening who are living in Dublin, are educated up to secondary level only and are either in low wage employment or unemployed to join our project advisory group as Public Patient Involvement (PPI) contributors.
