Help Us Improve Postoperative Pain Management and Infection Control

Introduction

Research Area:

Postoperative Care/ Surgery/ Pain Management/ Infection Control/ Surgical Site Infections/ Antimicrobial Resistance

What is the research about?

Each year, over 300 million surgeries are performed worldwide, with up to 75% of patients experiencing moderate to severe postoperative pain, yet less than half report satisfactory pain control. Moreover, complications such as surgical site infections (Sis) can occur in up to 40 % of surgeries, leading to prolonged recovery times and higher healthcare costs.

At Queen’s University Belfast, we are working on developing innovative medical devices that aim to make recovery after surgery safer and more comfortable. Our focus is on two cutting-edge solutions:

1. A non-opioid pain relief implant – This small, solid device can be placed during surgery to provide up to 7 days of steady pain relief without the need for strong painkillers such as opioids.
2. Advanced antimicrobial sutures – These sutures release multiple infection-fighting drugs to help protect surgical wounds and reduce the risk of infections over time.
We want to ensure these solutions meet the real needs of patients and surgeons. That’s where you come in!
