Physical Activity Promotion for chronic disease management in General Practice
Home > Opportunities > Physical Activity Promotion for chronic disease management in General Practice
Introduction
Research Area:
chronic conditions/ Chronic Disease Management
What is the research about?
In 2024, The Health Services Executive in Ireland developed and launched an evidence-based physical activity pathway for use within healthcare settings called the National Physical Activity Pathway in Healthcare (PAPH). The specific aim of the PAPH is to enable healthcare practitioners to better support their patients to in implementing exercise as part of their disease prevention and treatment strategies. The PAPH has four steps for a healthcare professional to take:
1) Screening for physical activity levels
2) Giving person centred physical activity advice
3) Signpost or refer the individual to support that will help them be more active
4) Follow up review (and screen again)
We are currently creating a funding application to conduct research on this pathway with the aid of PPI contributors. The aim of this research is to
(1) explore the barriers and facilitators to implementing this pathway in General Practice from both the clinician and the patients’ perspective and
(2) devise an implementation strategy to help overcome the identified barriers and ensure all patients with chronic disease are provided with the guidance/opportunity to increase their physical activity levels and in turn, improve their quality of life.
Who is the opportunity for?
We are looking for 2 PPI contributors; one man and one woman between the ages of 30-65 years. PPI contributors must be living with a chronic disease (long standing cardiovascular, respiratory, diabetes etc). It would be beneficial if the contributors are currently not active (do not participate in regular physical activity) and would be interested in having the topic of ‘physical activity and exercise participation’ discussed with them by their GP or practice nurse. As the project focuses on the Irish health system, the contributors must be residents in the RoI.
What will PPI contributors do?
PPI contributors will contribute to a funding application initially over two online meetings with the primary investigator and co-investigator. The first meeting will be used to provide an overview of the project application and the second to gather feedback. Due to the short timeframe, there will be a requirement to review some materials in between the meetings. The material will be sent via email and communication between meetings via email. It is estimated that the time required will be 6 hours. If our application is successful, PPI contributors will have the option to become a member of our research team for the duration of the two year project.
