PPI Ignite Network Leader

Professor Sean Dinneen is the national lead of the PPI Ignite Network, having previously led the PPI Ignite team at University of Galway (2018-2021), where University of Galway was a key innovator in bring the public into the heart of research from ideation to the delivery of results. Professor Dinneen has a strong track record in delivering patient-centred approaches to care delivery and a strong PPI ethos is central to his research.

Professor Dinneen is Professor of Diabetic Medicine at University of Galway and a consultant endocrinologist at Galway University Hospitals. He was the National Diabetes Clinical Lead in Ireland (2016-2022) and in late 2024, was appointed clinical lead for a programme developing a national diabetes registry. Sean graduated from UCC Medical School and completed his postgraduate training in Ireland and a Residency at the Mayo Clinic in the US. His professional interests include developing and evaluating programmes of self-management education for people with diabetes, developing optimal models of community-based diabetes care and understanding the diabetic foot.

Sean leads the D1 Now research programme, conducting a clinical trial that aims to improve engagement between young adults with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) and their healthcare providers and ultimately improve their self management and diabetes-related health outcomes. D1 Now is breaking new ground, with the intervention co-designed by researchers and young adults living with T1D.
