PPI Ignite Network statement on research ethics committee approval

Description:

There is a distinction between the requirement for approval from a research ethics committee and the ethical practice of research. Ethical practice of research is always expected. There are a number of guidelines available or under development that focus on ethical practice of PPI.

This statement from the PPI Ignite Network is intended to clarify if approval from a research ethics committee is required prior to public and patient involvement in research.

How was this statement developed?

This statement was developed in 2023 by a working group of PPI Ignite Network staff, PPI contributors, institutional research ethics project officers, members of institutional research ethics committees and researchers. It was reviewed and refined via public consultation and a focus group with PPI contributors with experience of PPI in research.
